Match Preview: Welwyn Garden City v Kidlington FC

A recent victory at the hands of Ware FC saw Kidlington earn their first 3 points and a clean sheet in over a month, but now they face a trip to a valiant Welwyn Garden City.

Kidlington have picked up just 3 points in their last 12 away from home, so Mark Massingham’s side will hope to replenish that form, starting with their fixture this afternoon.

Many forget that Kidlington’s run in the previous 8 games, has also been one of the hardest many teams will face during the season, facing the Top 7 in 8 of those affairs.

As it begins to look tight near the wrong end of the Southern League Division One Central, teams will do whatever they can to earn points, and last Saturday showed no short of that. Kidlington threw bodies on the line including some magicary from the man between the sticks, Jack Hopwood.

New signing Josh Davis also got off to a perfect start as he headed home on his debut after 11 minutes which turned out to be the winning goal.

Despite their fight to earn crucial points away from home, Welwyn have only seen victory twice in their previous 10 at home, something Weatherstone and his team will want to turn around as their away form means they remain in the hunt for the playoffs.

As we enter a crucial part of the season, games become more and more unpredictable, and we have another unpredictable game on our hands this afternoon in Hertfordshire.

Recent Form:
Welwyn - L W L W W
Like mentioned earlier, Welwyn’s away from has been nothing but sweet for The Citizens. A 9 goal thriller occurred at the expense of Biggleswade, Welwyn came out on top and won 4-5.

A team who struggle for momentum on home turf have picked up just 8 points from a possible 24. Welwyn are yet to earn three points at home for 2024, with their last victory at The Pexhurst Stadium coming in late December.

Kidlington - L D L L W
The Greens’ recent win at home to Ware will massively bolster then coming into this afternoon.

However, Kidlington have ventured out as winners just once since October away from home. This win came early January, at the hands of Cirencester, a team Kidlington have done the double over this season for the first time in Kiddy’s history.

Words from the Gaffer:
We spoke to Mark Massingham during the week who raised the point about the run of hard games as of late: “WGC (Welwyn Garden City) is always a tough game, they are an experienced team who are in a good position, but the lads have come through playing the full top 7 all since Christmas in good spirits, trained well, and are in a good place”.

“We know if we do what we can we are a match for anyone: it's just a case of making the game easy for ourselves instead of beating ourselves, especially in the final third”.

“The lads are in a good place and we are looking forward to building on last week's win in the coming weeks starting tomorrow(today)”.

Last Time Out:
Welwyn ran out 0-2 winners at Yarnton Road right at the opening end of the season. Two late first half goals from Wynter and Doherty broke a new Kidlington side who were yet to gel.
