Extra Preliminary Round Of The FA Cup Kidlington V Newbury

Kidlington 3 Newbury 0

After their fine start to the league season Uhlsport Hellenic side Kidlington turned their attention to the world famous FA Cup when they took on fellow Hellenic side Newbury at Yarnton Road.

Kidlington's manager Martin Wilkinson had to shuffle his pack again as leading scorer Ryan Curtin was unavailable because of a family wedding whilst Rob Johnson was still out injured and wasn't available and Tommy Castle and Martin Dawson both had injuries which prevented them starting the match.

The game started at quite a pace with both side seeing plenty of the ball and some good early football ensued. The first real attempt on goal came from Newbury's Kaleem Madden however Kiddy keeper Mike Bawn fielded his shot well.

In the 13 minute Newbury very nearly took the lead when a rasping drive from Tom Mahoney crashed into the far post, but unluckily for him it bounced back into play with Bawn beaten this time.

This incident seemed to stun Kidlington into action and a decent attack ended with Lewis Coyle shooting wide of the goal. Not to be outdone in their very next attack Coyle gave Kiddy the lead. After some good build up involving Charlie Cassattari and Jack Quainton Coyle received the ball in the centre of the box, the little man controlled it with his knee and teed it up before volleying home in the 20th minute. This was yet another top notch strike by a player that's making a habit of scoring spectacular goals this season.

Kiddy were now bossing the match and just after the half hour went two up, this time it was a well worked goal with Chris Weedon providing a great cross for Skipper Chris Blakely to head smartly home, this goal being Blakely's first for his new club.

Before the break an nasty tackle on another of Kidlington's new signings James McGowan saw him have to leave the field with what appears to be ankle ligament damage, Ben Willoughby came on to replace him.

HT 2 - 0

Certainly the start to the second half saw Newbury up their game but Kidlington were equal to anything the visitors tried to manufacture for themselves with Franklin and Liam Rice playing well at the back.

In fact it was Kidlington in the form of Coyle who came closest to adding to the score line, but visiting keeper Freddie Gee made a top notch save to prevent him scoring when he turned his rasping shot round the post for a corner.

On 57 minutes it was 3 - 0. Some more excellent football from Kidlington culminated in a pin point cross from Jack Quainton that found Charlie Cassettari's head and the young midfielder planted the ball into the back of the net with a powerful header.

The game was becoming a bit feisty now and in the 67th minute an awful foul on Kidlington's Willoughby led to a fracas involving several players from both sides. The Newbury transgressor received a yellow card, whilst Kiddy's Chris Weedon was dismissed and Tommy Franklin booked.

Kidlington were now well on top and although only having 10 players were still bossing the game. Several substitution by both sides were made but any real fire Newbury had was extinguished and Kidlington were able to see out the rest of the game in relative comfort.

This win, Kidlington's third of the fledgling season, means they now face a trip to Wantage Town in the preliminary round of the FA Cup in a couple of weeks time. In the meantime Kidlington travel to Reading Town this Tuesday before entertaining Highmoor Ibis at Yarnton road next Saturday.
