Chaotic ending as Kidlington progresses.

Chaotic ending as Kidlington progresses.

Ashford Town 1-3 Kidlington FC

Ashford are the second team this season to play Kidlington twice already, not to the league's fault however, as this time a spot in the First Round Proper in the Isuzu FA Vase was up for grabs. Heading back just 14 days and Kidlington ran out 2-3 winners here in Middlesex, taking all three points back to Oxfordshire. Goals from Adam Smith and two from Kauan were enough for a hardfought victory.

With the focus switching to the Vase and the hopes of Wembley down the line, off we set at The Robert Parker Stadium. Kidlington in the all green kit for the first time in a long while although an away kit was fielded in the first fixture.

Despite Adam Smith winning a corner and meeting a volley from a switch from Aydin Ulas, it was a fairly slow start to proceedings second time round as Kidlington were forced to sit in.

Mark Flanagan’s clearance off the line after 20 was the only noticeable action to begin with.

New signing Mason Courtney, from local rivals Ardley United, had a chance to open the scoring just minutes from the break but his freekick from close range was well saved.

A dream end to a half that maybe didn’t have much in it, as Kidlington found themselves a goal to the good! Mason Courtney swung a ball towards the back post which found Micheal Hopkins. He was able to get it down and fizz a low ball across the face of goal, where Lewis Gabbidon pounced upon and poked home into an empty net. 0-1 to Kidlington.

Ashford came out roaring in the second half forcing Kidlington into some more tricky defending, which they held off extremely well, before finding a second goal 58 minutes in. Osborne helped Kidlington break away and looked up at his options to see an unmarked Aydin Ulas who received the ball and took his time before rocketing home to give Kidlington a two-goal cushion.

However, things took a dramatic toll and in the space of 10 minutes we had three red cards, two goals and a penalty save. Nuts.

Let’s begin with Alfie Clarke. 18-year old Alfie. Not only was he required to step in for the absent Charlie Barnett but a range of reaction-stops including a magnificent save from the penalty spot. An arguable decision saw the Referee point to the spot after 82, however Clarke went the right way and halted Ashford from opening the scoring.

Following the save, the penalty taker then aggressively lunges in on Clarke and sees a straight red, Ashford’s first. Just four minutes later the home side’s skipper received another red, however we’re unable to comment on what for as we simply don’t know. Then to add salt to the wounds one of the management staff was sent to the changing rooms! It was a matter of chaos and not a lot of people knew what was really going on. All in the space of five minutes.

Ashford find a consolation in stoppage time due to a lapse in concentration in and around the area, which is then cancelled out as substitute Joey Aust topped off a competitive display and slotted home - progressing Kidlington to the First Round Proper of the Isuzu FA Vase, a good day all round.
