Brave Kidlington lose to Wantage

Brave Kidlington lose to Wantage

Simon Dickens24 Aug 2013 - 17:52

Hotly disputed late penalty denies Kidlington a deserved point.

Kidlington 0 Wantage Town 1

A diabolical penalty decision late in the game saw Wantage take all three points from this clash at Yarnton Road.

Kidlington without several 1st team players fielded a side which included two 18 year old centre backs, but seemed to have done more than enough to have earned at least a point from the game.

Wantage shaded the 1st half without really testing Kiddy keeper Matt Hyslop, however things were far more even after the break. Kiddy forward Marley Thomas had given the Wantage's defence a hard time all afternoon but late on after an off the ball incident Thomas found himself in deep trouble when he retaliated to being unnecessarily kicked in the shins. The lad turned and kicked out which was spotted by both the ref and the linesman and he was instantly shown a red card. From this free kick the ball was pumped out to the left wing and when the Wantage player darted into the box and crossed the ball it brushed against an un-raised arm of a Kiddy defender and a penalty kick was awarded.

Wantage were immensely grateful for the assist from match referee Alex Lewis as Tom Melledew duly stroked home the spot kick for 1 - 0 in the 87th minute.

Till this point Wantage never looked like finding the net, but in fairness nor had Kidlington and a draw would have been a fairer result.

Disappointing as the result was today i'm sure manager Martin Wilkinson will find plenty of positives from his teams all-round performance.
